Our Choirs

Young Singers

Young Singers is our youngest group of singers, from Kindergarten to Grade 2. In this group, boys will learn to match pitch, singing in unison and simple two-part music, make a nice round sound, basic music notation reading, and making music with other boys their age. We keep these rehearsals short and active to keep them engaged and working hard. Most of the concepts are taught through games and other activities so that they experience joy in making great music!

Intermediate Choir

(formerly Masters Choir)

Our Intermediate Choir is made up of boys in grades 3-5. They range in ability from boys that have already spent some time in the Young Singers to any new boys that join the organization. In this group, we continue to expand their vocal skills to include two and three-part music, more complicated rhythm and note reading, and the start of becoming more independent in their choral singing. This group also gets the chance to develop some leadership skills as they partner with the Young Singers for some of their songs and to model a great singing sound for the younger group.

Concert Choir:

(formerly Gentlemen's Choir)

This is our most advanced group. The boys in this group have usually spent a few years in the Intermediate Choir, preparing the skills needed to join the Concert Choir. In the Concert Choir, the boys are expected to have some independence in their singing sound, reading music, and able to maintain their part with two or three (or more!) other parts going on around them. These boys are given many opportunities to develop their leadership skills as they demonstrate good vocal sound and lead our younger two groups in some songs for each concert. Due to their independent ability, we are able to learn a large amount of repertoire and have some flexibility in picking appropriate pieces when asked to do an extra performance.

Weekly Wednesday rehearsals take place at Knox Presbyterian Church,

3704 37 St SW, Calgary, AB T3E 3C3

Levon Y.

Our family has been so appreciative of how the Calgary Boys' Choir has been able to adapt to the changing conditions during the pandemic - to ensure that our son continues making and learning music with and for his community. From physically distanced outdoor rehearsals when public health restrictions allowed, to utilizing technology to hold online rehearsals and share performances, as needed. The efforts of the CBC have contributed greatly to our ability to live life well during all of this, and keep us connected as a community.

Chorister- Concert Choir

The thing I enjoyed about the boy's choir was how easy they made it to learn in the environment. I also enjoyed how much individual attention everyone got compared to other choirs.

Through all the challenges this year has brought, I have been inspired by the resolve of the Calgary Boys’ Choir to keep the music alive.  Through both in person and virtual sessions, the choir has provided my son with much needed social interaction with friends, continued musical training, and most importantly the gift of song.  Thank you Calgary Boys’ Choir for keeping our boys singing!  -Tina M
